About European Night Crawlers

European Night Crawlers (Eisenia hortensis) are among the most effective natural baits for freshwater fishing. These large, robust worms are prized by anglers for their durability and fish-attracting properties. They are the larger cousins of the common red wiggler (Eisenia fetida) and are also known as blue worms, Carolina crawlers, super red, and Belgian worms.

Scientific Classification: Eisenia hortensis (previously known as Dendrobaena hortensis and originally classified as Dendrobaena veneta before being reclassified).

Key Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically 5-10 cm long (occasionally larger under ideal conditions)
  • Color: Pink-grey with clearly banded segments (annuli)
  • Weight: About 1-2 grams when fully grown
  • Durability: Long-lasting on the hook
  • Movement: Active, wriggling motion
  • Lifespan: Can live several years (often 2-3+ in good conditions)

Best For:

  • Murray Cod fishing
  • Golden Perch fishing
  • Trout fishing
  • Catfish fishing
  • General freshwater fishing

Care Instructions

Storage:

  • Keep in cool, dark place (10-15°C)
  • Store in original container or dampened peat moss bedding
  • Keep bedding moist but not soaked (should only drip a few drops when squeezed)
  • Ensure proper ventilation for air circulation
  • Maintain pH around neutral (6.5-7.5) - add limestone powder if needed

Handling:

  • Handle gently to avoid damage to the annuli (ring segments)
  • Use wet hands when handling
  • Return unused worms to container immediately
  • Keep out of direct sunlight
  • Avoid overfeeding - worms eat slowly

Fishing Tips:

  • Hook through the collar for best results
  • Use appropriate hook size for the worm size
  • Change worms regularly for best attraction
  • Keep worms cool while fishing
  • Larger size makes them excellent for bigger fish

Breeding Facts:

  • Mature in less than 13 weeks
  • Each cocoon produces 2 hatchlings on average
  • Population can double every 2-3 months under optimal conditions
  • Breeding cycle: 27 days from mating to egg laying
  • Colony dwellers - comfortable sharing space
